This year Sino Group's Art in Hong Kong programme presents an exhibition titled "Family Matters - Works by Louise Lee" that explores humanity and motherhood. Insightfully capturing the various states of different people's living conditions with a mother's instinct, a woman's sensitivity and an artist's acute sense, Lee expresses the eternal theme of motherhood.
Baby carriers: the joy of bearing
The representation of motherhood is powerfully articulated in Lee's works. The baby carrier installation symbolises the challenge of motherhood and the dramatic changes in the artist's identity. As an artist and a mother, Lee is fascinated by the exuberant colours of the fabrics of baby carriers found in the wholesaler's market. She used more than 50 kinds of colour fabrics to create her installation. Lee has replaced the original embroideries of the baby carriers with silk-screen printings of the facial expressions of her son. She has adopted the idea of repetition from Warhol's work to represent the irresistible disturbance caused by her son's intrusion in her life. She also patched up the remaining fabric of primary colours and furnished it with black lace, attempting to reinterpret Piet Mondrian's Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow in the shape of baby carriers.
Love and hope
Louise Lee will donate two of the exhibiting artworks for charity sale, namely The Joy of Bearing I and Celebration (seven pieces of the whole baby carrier installation). All proceeds will go to the SCMP Homes for Hope project to help rebuild homes for the Sichuan earthquake victims.
